We’re now in to the second iteration of an iOS and Android student resource phone app for this forward-thinking London-based specialist sixth form college.
The objective was to update the design and functionality of the app, already a part of the daily lives of the college’s students and staff. Therefore, the decision was taken to overhaul the app during a tight timeframe during the college summer break, so that users would return in September to the new app. It goes without saying we were up for the task!
Create
In collaboration with the college, we created a refreshed user interface design and navigation, maintaining the non-scrolling app homescreen, so that users have everything in view immediately. Once again, key to the app’s functionality is a custom integration with the college's Student Management & Information System, Advanced ProSolution, something we consider a strength in standing out from the competition. This offers a seamless delivery of personalised information to the app - timetables, target setting, attendance records, punctuality records and more! A brand new feature was also introduced - Talent Lab - encouraging students to get involved with college activities, workshops, experiment with ideas or independent activities. The points awarded through Talent Lab help give shape, identity and recognition to students for the positive actions they take. A truly outstanding example of using digital products to improvement engagement!
College staff can communicate with students, individually or as subject groups through our very own app CMS using free unlimited push notifications. They can also use a barcode reader to scan student ID badges and check students’ timetables and activities on-the-fly around college.
Communicate
The app update hit the Apple and Google stores on time, ready for Freshers’ Week/returning students. Based on this being an update to the existing app, the college knew it was packed full of features and functionality designed to ensure maximum engagement with students.
Many colleges are fazed by a technical project like this, or simply don’t see the value in spending money on a free-to-use app for current students that cannot be monetised.
